Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol & Drugs

Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol & Drugs exists to support those affected by the substance misuse of a loved one, because families need to recover too. We facilitate a Scotland-wide network of family support groups and run a helpline service.

Financial support

Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol & Drugs stated, it is of financial benefit to provide services to family members. A UK Drugs Policy Commission policy report, ‘Supporting the supporters: families of drug misusers’ from 2009 report estimates that each family member can save the NHS and local authorities £3,935 through the family member providing free ‘services’ such as social care.

NHS Choices’ Care and support section has information, advice and support for carers on all aspects of caring, from financial and legal issues to respite care and access to local services. Call the Carers Direct helpline on 0300 123 1053 or ask a question by email.


Adfam provides direct support to families through publications, training, prison visitors’ centres, outreach work and information about local support services. The charity’s website has information to help families deal with the problems they face.
